What is a barn find?

By Judge Mental

Ask any gear head what a "barn find" is and his eyes will light up and start telling you about his greatest barn finds. So what the heck is a barn find?

A barn find is the term that describes finding an old "forgotten" vintage vehicle that has been hidden away (sometimes in a barn) and now found to the new owners delight.

Imagine driving through a small town and stopping to get gas at the local station. When going around back to find the restroom you see a large black tarp over what appears to be a automobile. To your surprise when you lift up the tarp you see a 1932 Chevy sitting there as if it had been parked there for 70 years untouched. You ask the owner of the gas station what he wants for it and he tells you that he will accept $2,000 for the old "bucket of bolts". That my friends is a barn find!

When searching the internet you will find all sorts of crazy stories about folks finding ridiculously rare barn finds and while those stories are few and far between barn finds are not rare and anyone can get their hands on one if they look hard enough.

Almost all rat rods and hot rods that are being produced today were once a barn find.

Happy hunting!

Judge,

Enjoyed your Intel!

My brother has one of these barn finds when we were growing up.

He found a 1958 Abarth (limited model manufactured by Fiat). Car body was made of aluminum and had an aluminum block, super light sports car. Engine was in the rear of the car.

I think only 200 cars were manufactured.

Anyway, intentions were good to restore but never did, the car ended up back in someone“s barn or under their tarp somewhere.

Believe it or not the legend of the barn find abounds even in the Philippines which doesn't have an automobile industry. There's stories of vehicles brought over from the US in the pre-war years (when the Philippines was under US occupation) and ending up tucked away in coconut groves. Searching for these vehicles is not quite as big an industry as digging for gold treasure left behind by the Japanese when they were occupying the islands, but plenty of people are into it.

Here in New England, shearching for barn finds is an on-going experience. It has other names, but it's really barn finds.
Thanks for sharing.
