NASCAR WildCard Race

I have an idea that I think would really add a HUGE amount of interest to the Nextel Cup Championship race. I like what NASACR has done implementing the "Chase or the Cup" and I also like the excitement surrounding the chase of the chase.

Yet there is a change that NASCAR officals could make to add even more excitement to the end of the Cup season and I ask that all of you spread this idea around in hopes that NASCAR adopts something similar to it.

My idea is called....

The NEXTEL CUP WILDCARD Race.

And here is how it would work: each year there would one NON POINTS race held AFTER the ten "Race for the Chase" drivers have been selected and secured. The 12 drivers who are already in the "chase" would not participate in this wildcard race, the 12 chase drivers would get a "bye" week similar to the bye weeks for the top divisional winners in the NFL playoff system. The remaining drivers would all complete in this one final race with the winner being added to the "Chase for the Cup" as a wildcard. That would mean there would be eleven "Chase for the Cup" participants; the ten qualifying drivers, and the one wildcard driver. The wildcard race would have no qualifying, instead the cars would be lined up in order of the current points standings i.e., the 13th place driver in points would be on the pole, the 14th pace driver would be on the outside pole and so on.

The wildcard race would be AWESOME! Imagine one last chance to race your way back into the championship hunt for all the remaining drivers that missed out on the "Chase foe the Cup". Dale Jr., Jeff Gordon, Kasey Kahne, and all the other drivers that have competed in at least 90% of all the races that season would have one last shot to make the chase. The winner of the wildcard race would be added to the "Chase for the Cup" series in the eleventh spot.

Another bonus to this new format would be that the 10 Chase for the Cup participants would not be guaranteed a top ten finish at the end of the season as they would still have to beat out the wildcard driver.

Getting rid of the term "mathematically eliminated" would be great as would keeping all the drivers hopes alive until near the end of the season. And can you imagine the intensity of that wildcard race?

I suggest we hold the wildcard race at a different facility each year, Daytona one year, Talledega, Texas, Martinsville etc. in other years.

What say ye NASCAR? Every other major sport has a wildcard format and it's time you adopt one as well, and frankly no other sport could possibly claim a more exciting wildcard format than the one I have outlined above.
