From Google page 2, to Google page 1

Every now and then it is wise to go back and edit the websites you have created in the past. It's amazing how much you learn about search engine optimization over time and how you probably didn't do your best SEO work when you initially created your site. Or possibly things have changed in your niche so it's good to go back and revisit your existing websites at least once a month.

Recently one of my websites was getting a page one google result for a long tail keyword phrase and a page two google result for the main shorter term which I was extremely happy about.

The title tag of my website was something like....

Blue Widgets for sale

I was ranked on the first page of google when that phrase was searched and that phrase had a decent search frequency (over 30 times per day) so my site was starting to get pretty good organic traffic. The shorter term "blue widgets" placed me on page 2 of google which was also really cool!

Yet I went back to the site and did some minor editing. I changed my title tag to...

Blue Widgets | Blue Widgets for Sale

And the very next day I was on the first page of Google for blue widgets, in fact I was in the juicy 4th place spot (and that shorter phrase is searched over 800 times per day). Incredible! Such a small change made such a big difference in my SERP. Obviously my traffic is dramatically increasing.

The bottom line is....
Revisit your existing web pages, make sure to have your title tags and your meta description include the phrases that you want people to find you when they search. Don't leave it to chance by only including these phrases in your content. Now of course you certainly wouldn't want to overload (SPAM) your page with your keyphrases but you also don't want to leave them off unnecessarily.

Finding the right keyphrases for your website is sort of like common sense. Imagine in your mind what your customers would type into google if they are looking for what you are selling, then make sure that phrase actually gets traffic (there are free keyword tools all over the net) and then make sure you put that phrase(s) in your title tag and at the beginning of your meta description. In other words... if you are selling blue widgets you NEED to have "Blue Widgets for Sale" in your title tag, seems obvious right? You would be surprised to see how the vast majority of websites ignore their main keyword phrase in their title tag and in their meta description. Don't make that same mistake!
